Position Summary:

Continued implementation of the English Skills Learning Center (ESLC) Humanitarian Center ESL Program, whose participants are low-income adult refugees or immigrants seeking employment to support their families. ESLC’s small group programming focuses on basic literacy, driver’s preparation, civics, and empowering parents to engage in their children’s education. Additional oversight of ESLC’s small group programming with our South Salt Lake partnership.


  • Supervise volunteers facilitating 60-weekly instructional hours through small group classes at Humanitarian Center
  • Support all volunteers through matching with Humanitarian Center small group assignment, frequent communication, regular team-teaching and observations, and ongoing training opportunities
  • Act as a liaison between ESLC and Humanitarian Center collaborative partners, such as LDS Humanitarian Center administration and Granite Peaks on-site instructors
  • Coordinate the weekly schedules of volunteers assigned to the Humanitarian Center as well as any coordination between the ESLC, Granite Peaks, and Humanitarian Center staff
  • Manage weekly substitution needs by finding appropriate replacements and covering classes as needed
  • Continue development of Humanitarian Center small group curricula and choose appropriate supplemental materials
  • Assist ESLC Community and Outreach Director with regular volunteer trainings and quarterly workshops
  • Share responsibility with ESLC staff for providing direct services such as intakes and regular student testing
  • Other duties related to the management of student and volunteer programming needs at a partnership location in South Salt Lake

    Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Above average ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse individuals
  • Significant experience working with low to moderate-income community groups
  • Ability to motivate and supervise volunteers
  • Professional competence in cross-cultural situations
  • TESOL or equivalent ESL certification and experience as a professional ESL teacher Preference will be given to applicants with experience coordinating programs and/or volunteers in a non-profit setting.

    Other requirements:

    Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Salt Lake County necessary to perform job functions. Background check will be performed on chosen candidate.

Non-Tenure-Track Instructor, Writing and ESL

Western Oregon University seeks a full- or part-time non-tenure-track Instructor of Writing with expertise in Academic Writing for English Language Learners. Usual full-time teaching load will be 4 four-credit classes per quarter consisting of primarily College Writing I and II (sections for International Students) and a grammar of academic discourse class for international students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL/ESL/EFL/Applied Linguistics or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience with ESL/ELLs at the post-secondary level
  • Experience teaching college writing
  • Skills and experience to motivate students from a range of academic, cultural, socioeconomic, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds
  • Team-oriented willingness to participate in program development
  • Excellent fluency and accuracy in spoken and written English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching/living overseas
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in ESL and its instructional program (i.e., record of on-going professional development)
  • Proficiency in another language

Faculty Position:        ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Application Review begins April 25th


  • Teach the equivalent of 24 credits annually in the education program with a focus on ESL plus the equivalent of three credit hours or more in institutional service as defined by the School of Education.
  • Assist in meeting various forms of accreditation (NCATE, TEAC, Northwest, USOE, etc.), and state and national teacher education standards requirements.
  • Coordinate with local school district personnel to ensure that the DSU elementary education program prepares students for K-12 ESL needs.
  • Supervise and mentor DSU students in field experience settings.
  • Perform campus duties including holding office hours, advising students, attending faculty and other DSU meetings, and serving on university, school and department committees.
  • Consult with department chair and dean in creating and delivering curriculum.
  • Adhere to department, school, and university policies.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree required, (Must be completed by August 1, 2014) in English as a Second Language education.
  • Minimum of three-years experience teaching ELL students in a K-12 setting.
  • Demonstrated ability in successful teaching (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence by teaching a lesson).
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in creative, unique, and effective approaches to teacher education.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Good organization and time management skills.
  • Candidates must be competent with the use of technology in instruction.

SLCC Job Opening

Salt Lake Community College is looking for an ESL certified teacher who can teach a developmental reading (RDG 0990) course on MWF at 1:00 pm.  The course is to begin in January 2013.  The majority of the students in these courses speak English as an additional language, but there may also be some native speakers of English in the classes.  The main purpose of these courses is to help students develop and improve academic reading skills.
