English language learners bring new ideas and cultural insights from around the world. They also remind us of the challenges and joys of learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. Come and share your own stories as we explore ways to enhance language learning, academic instruction, and intercultural awareness in our schools and communities.

Dr. Francisco Jimenez is a recipient of many awards including the Americas Award, the Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Fiction, and the 2002 U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Emigrating from Tlaquepaque, Mexico to California, Francisco and his family followed the agricultural circuit laboring in the fields and moving from one crop harvest to the next. Through extreme poverty, heartache, and seemingly impossible setbacks, Francisco never gave up his love of learning nor his dream of becoming a teacher. His autobiographical trilogy, The Circuit, Breaking Through, and Reaching Out, vividly relates Francisco’s compelling life story.
